I've just bought myself an early 30th Birthday present: a new Nikon D7000 body. I haven't even begun to test it properly, but so far I am impressed with the massive improvement in High ISO noiselessness compared to my old D80.
My next decision is to upgrade my standard lense on it too. I'm somewhat stuck between a myriad of factors, whereby I'm not sure if I should spend serious £'s on a pro-level lense, as I know a good lense doesn't become obsolete as quickly as a camera body does. Yet, I haven't taken photography seriously in a professional sense since 2009 - so is it really worth it?
I want to say yes, of course, with the pro series you get what you pay for.
But then... well you get the idea, it just seems like so much money. And the alternatives? Well they're good if just not quite fast enough:
[Pro] Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 G DX AF-S IF ED:
[Semi-Pro] Nikon 24-120mm f4 G VR AF-S ED:
[Enthusiast] Nikon 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 G VR AF-S ED:
Anyway, decision to follow soon. For now here's a picture of some iberian ham taken with my old 18-135mm kit lense:
And another of our hoover (!)
